Shawmut Showcases Revolutionary New Heated Fabric
West Bridgewater, Mass.,
May 19, 2004 -- At this year’s 2004 Auto Interiors
Show in Detroit, Shawmut showcased its latest innovation—the
world’s first fabric that conducts electricity.
It has been common practice to produce heated textile and leather
products by incorporating low voltage wire grids into the system.
Passing a current through the grid creates heat as a result of
the resistance of the wires. But the wires can break over time,
rendering the entire product useless.
Shawmut Corporation is now introducing new leather
and textile composites which include fabrics which have been modified
to allow them to conduct electricity. The resistance of these
fabrics can be altered as needed to create the desired levels
of warmth in the finished product. The advantages of these composites
lie in their reduced complexity resulting in a longer product
life, the ability to mold effortlessly to complex shapes, to sustain
even temperatures, and to offer superb breathability.
Shawmut Corporation, founded in 1916 and based in
West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is a materials engineering company
providing premier textile composite materials. It is the largest
supplier of foam-in-place laminates in North America.
